How a community’s resolve sparked a statewide movement to combat addiction and erase stigma. In 2007, in the small community of Fraser, Michigan, a group of grieving, frustrated, and determined individuals gathered in the basement of Christ United Church, seeking answers and action.
Founded in 2007, Face Addiction Now (FAN; formerly Families Against Narcotics) is a grassroots organization originating in Fraser, Michigan. Twelve years ago, close to 100 angry and frustrated people gathered at a town hall meeting in the basement of Christ United Church in Fraser to discuss the recent deaths of several young people from heroin overdoses. Many of the attendees were grieving the loss of a loved one, others were suffering the nightmare of addiction themselves or dealing with an addicted loved one, some were in recovery, others were school personnel, law enforcement, community leaders, and concerned citizens. All shared a common concern, our kids were dying. Why was this happening and what could we do about it? Anger filled the room, and fingers were pointed, someone had to assume the blame. After several hours, tempers subsided and all who were present realized nothing would be accomplished until we found a common ground and positive avenues to tackle this issue. One of the young recovering addicts said, "Kids aren't listening to you (adults). Let us talk to them and share our real stories of addiction." Richard Ripicky, Superintendent of Fraser Schools, made it happen. The group that met in that church basement have continued their efforts, along with hundreds more, in the fight to make a difference.
We work tirelessly to educate young adults, parents, school personnel, law enforcement, judges, doctors, and other health care professionals about the dangers of misusing prescription drugs, especially painkillers. FAN has grown to more than 20 chapters throughout Michigan and offers dozens of monthly support meetings across the state.
Our mission is to educate, change the face of addiction, and erase the stigma associated with the disease. Substance use disorder is at epidemic levels in the U.S., because people stay silent and keep addiction hidden. FAN members are brave people who refuse to stay silent, in hopes that we can raise awareness and support individuals and families who have been affected by addiction.
