FAN embraces harm reduction as a set of practical strategies aimed at minimizing the negative consequences associated with drug use. We are dedicated to meeting individuals where they are, providing non-judgmental care, and treating addiction as a health condition. Our efforts focus on preventing disease, reducing the risk of HIV and hepatitis transmission, and preventing overdoses, all while connecting participants with essential resources and ensuring they receive compassionate support through our street outreach and medicine teams.
According to the National Harm Reduction Coalition, harm reduction encompasses a range of strategies that include safer use, managed use, and abstinence. It focuses on meeting people who use drugs “where they’re at” and addressing both the circumstances of drug use and the use itself.
Our street outreach teams include individuals with lived experience in recovery, who bring empathy and understanding to their work. In partnership with MSU Street Medicine, FAN is committed to working with future doctors, providing them with the opportunity to learn how to serve this population with dignity and respect.
Outreach Services are available in Macomb County, Oakland County, Saginaw, and Detroit.
